Abstract
The aim of this paper is the description of the origins and evolution of the meaning of parabola. I intend to show the reasons and circumstances which brought about its superseding, in all Romance languages, verbum, the classical term to express the idea of word. I will examine, first, some Vulgata texts in which the context indicates parabola was used in the sense of word, speech, proverb and, also, parable. Next I will try to explain the reasons behind the disappearance of verbum. Traditionally it has been accepted that its religious sense motivated it. Nevertheless, I believe orality, the spoken language was the force behind: a new, more sonorous word, was more appealing to colloquial speech.
