Abstract

In this article, it is described the process of building a sandbox that uses augmented reality asa learning resource to teach science and math contents. This educational innovation projectallows to interact with the technology in a different way, without using screens, but directlymanipulating the sand and immediately checking the assumptions and hypotheses raised tothe students. Its interdisciplinary nature and the own device, allows to develop methodologiesof collaborative work in which the students manage and organize their own learning. Thetechnological problems for the implementation of this installation and analyzed, and also it isdescribed how open software and hardware technologies, collaborative communities and theavailability of accessible hardware allow the construction of this material. It is described, thesame principles of open knowledge, collaborative learning and multidisciplinary necessary toconstruct educational instruments that make effective the use of new technologies. It is alsoreflected how these values and philosophy are implemented in the MEDIALAB of the Universityof Salamanca to create a community around these innovations which finally gives the socialvalue to this type of initiatives. MEDIALAB with its infrastructure, facilities and staff, becomesthe key point for the development of a project like this in which participants from differentareas and scientific disciplines are needed, and can find the suitable place to exchangeexperiences and projects
