Abstract
Through this essay we seek to shed light on higher education from a critical perspective. As a metaphor, the life of Fridtjof Nansen –a norwegian artic explorer legend- is payed tribute with no other aim but to examine the weaknesses and, therefore, the challenges that higher education institutions are facing today. To gain some knowledge on how HEI (higher education institutions) work as organizations we choose some theories and models, such as the path dependency due to the fact that this theoretical framework is useful to handle an important issue about the ways HEIs are developed across the time. Apart from this theory, we take advantage of the policy agenda setting, released by Baumgartner & Jones, to explain to what the extend the HEIs are considered through the lens of politics attention.
