Abstract

Gram-stain-positive, non-spore-forming, and nonmotile rods; obligately anaerobic, although some strains may be aerotolerant. Strains have been isolated from the gut of mice and human feces. Adlercreutzia grow well on Wilkins–Chalgren Anaerobe agar at 37°C, pH 7, in an anaerobic atmosphere with 85% N2, 10% CO2, and 5% H2. Growth is stimulated in the presence of arginine, with most strains producing arginine dihydrolase. Peptidoglycan contains dl- or ll-diaminopimelic acid as diagnostic diamino acid. Predominant menaquinones are demethylmenaquinone-6 and methylmenaquinone-6. The major whole-cell sugars include galactose; ribose and glucose may also be present. The main polar lipid is diphosphatidylglycerol, but important amounts of unidentified glycolipids and phospholipids are also present; the amount of phosphatidylglycerol is variable. The predominant fatty acids are C16:0, C18:1 ω9c, iso-C15:0, and iso-C17:0. Genome size varies from 2.4 to 3 Mb. DNA G + C content varies from 62 to 65 mol%. Phylogenetically, a member of the family Eggerthellaceae
