Abstract
This introductory chapter offers a concise overview of Fermoselle, highlighting its unique characteristics. It explores several key aspects, beginning with the municipality’s geographical context within the Arribes region, bordering Portugal. The chapter then introduces Fermoselle itself, a town steeped in history, originating from a pre-Roman fort and known as the «Town of Wine and a Thousand Wineries» showcasing its rich historical and cultural heritage. A brief analysis of the town’s demographics concludes this section, noting the typical challenges of rural Spain: an aging population and continued decline. The second section delves into Fermoselle’s distinct ecological features. It emphasizes the dramatic landscape, characterized by a rugged plateau dissected by the river network, primarily carved into ancient metamorphic and igneous rock. The resulting topography significantly influences the climate. Temperatures are milder in the Arribes, while the higher plateau experiences conditions similar to the rest of the peneplain. Rainfall, more abundant in the west, decreases eastward. These varied topoclimatic conditions contribute to surprisingly diverse flora for such a small area, ranging from warm-climate vegetation on sun-drenched lower slopes to pockets of oak woodland on the plateau. Finally, the chapter examines Fermoselle’s natural and rural heritage. It discusses the various protective designations awarded to the area, recognizing its ecological and cultural significance. These include the Arribes del Duero Natural Park (part of the Castilla y León Network of Protected Natural Spaces), its inclusion in the Natura 2000 Network, and its designation as part of the cross-border «Meseta Ibérica»
