Abstract

Textbooks used during the compulsory stages of education contain valuable information on the basic scientific culture to which most of the public is exposed. In this article we present the results of content analysis procedures applied to textbooks used in the first and fourth years of secondary compulsory education in Spain. We analysed 81 books of all subjects, not only science textbooks. For the codification of the books’ contents we used a model that allows us to distinguish between strictly speaking scientific and technological information, such as knowledge, processes and values (Intrinsic) and representations of, attitudes towards and evaluations of science and technology (Extrinsic scientific and technological culture). The analysis allows us to detect some relevant features of scientific culture transmitted in compulsory secondary education in Spain. Particularly relevant are the independence of technological and scientific content and the disconnection between intrinsic and extrinsic components of scientific culture. This can be interpreted as the prevalence of an academic conception of science as opposed to an innovation-oriented culture as well as a more civic oriented scientific culture.
