Abstract

This study examines the mediating role of relational processes intimacy and power can have on the effect of acculturative stress on subjective well a sample of 120 pairs of immigrants from Latin America. Participants responded to an anonymous questionnaire that assessed sociodemographic variables, acculturative stress experiences, intimacy, positive and negative strategies of conflict negotiation, control over decision-making and three indicators of well-being (positive and negative affect and life satisfaction ). For the analysis of the data was used Interdependence Model Actor and Couple and Medication models. Survey results indicate that acculturative stress is negatively related to subjective well-being and a decrease in the experiences of intimacy and positive negotiation and increased negative experiences to negotiate the conflict. Finally, we found also mediating some effects relational variables examined. The results obtained suggest that acculturative stress has negative effects on the welfare of individuals, the welfare of their partners, and on the dynamics of their relationship. Thus, the stress that arises relates intercultural contact not only with lower levels of subjective well-being of the spouses, but also with increased difficulties in the relationship. As a result of the settlement in the new country and intercultural contact, immigrants will have to cope with different stressors (labor, administrative, economic, family, linguistic, etc..), Collected under the common denominator of acculturative stress. This type of stress can compromise welfare and adaptation of individuals in the new country. At the same time, and since a stressful context may affect the dynamics and relational experiences, it is conceivable that these stressors have a negative effect on two fundamental dimensions of the relationship, which in turn maintain a relationship with the welfare and psychological health of individuals: the intimacy and power. This study examines the effect of acculturative stress exerted on relational variables and subjective well-being of a sample of 120 pairs of immigrants from Latin America, and evaluates the processes mediating role relational intimacy and power. Participants responded to an anonymous questionnaire that assessed sociodemographic variables (age, administrative status, employment status, income, etc..) And relationship (number of children, length of relationship, etc..) As well as the experiences of acculturative stress, intimacy, positive and negative strategies of conflict negotiation, control over decision-making and three indicators of well-being (positive and negative affect and life satisfaction). For the analysis of the data was used Interdependence Model Actor and Couple and Medication models. The results of the study indicate that acculturative stress is negatively related to subjective well-being and a decrease in the experiences of intimacy and positive negotiation and increased negative experiences to negotiate the conflict. In light of the results obtained, it seems necessary to continue work on the processes through which the stress experienced by immigrants affects their psychological health, and at the same time, considering the importance of designing interventions that include work and promoting wellness in immigrant couples.
