ABSTRACT Introduction: Social and working conditions on any profession can affect the health related quality of life and, in Dentistry, although previous conditions have been thoroughly studied, we still know little about their effect on quality of life. Objectives: To describe the health related quality of life of private practice dentists in Spain and to evaluate whether certain sociodemographic, socioprofessional and burnout variables would influence the quality of life of Spanish private practice dentists. Material and method: In 2017, a cross-sectional analytical study was carried out on Spanish collegiate dentists with private professional activity. In this analysis, the SF-36v2 health questionnaire was used, which evaluates eight dimensions of health, four physical and four mental, summarized in two components of health: physical component and mental component. Results and conclusions: 568 Spanish private practice dentists between 27 and 76 years old, 270 men (47.5%) and 298 women (52.5%), were studied. Problems dentists with work-family balance, dissatisfaction with their income and burnout syndrome had lower values in physical and mental health components than spanish mean population. Women perceived their health to be worse, in the physical and mental component, than the spanish population, presenting lower values than men, especially in the mental scale. Specialists score higher on the physical and mental components than general dentists. Older dentists reported more mental health. Keywords: quality of life, SF-36v2, dentists, burnout.
