Resumo

The archaeological excavations recently undertaken at sites in Cantabrian Spain with levels attributed to the Gravettian (e. g. La Garma A and Fuente del Salín, in Cantabrian Spain; Nerja and Cendres, in the Spanish Mediterranean coast etc.) have yielded a large number of pendants made from different raw materials, mainly (non-fossil) marine shells, but also from such materials as teeth, bones and minerals. This presentation synthesizes the available information about shell beads and pendants of Gravettian age in the Iberian Peninsula. All the artefacts have been studied from a number of analytical perspectives (archaeozoological, taphonomic, technological, etc.). Finally, we reflect on the role played by personal ornaments within Gravettian hunter-gatherer societies in Europe.
