Abstract

The introduction of virtual reality in the journalistic production systems has given rise to the so called immersive journalism which gets the audience closer to the history like never before. By using devices with 360º cameras to capture the images as well as virtual reality glasses to watch audiovisual content, journalism production mechanics are being reformulated. As a result, a new journalistic product is emerging and it allows the spectator to immerse herself in a virtual environment that represents the real world and where she can live in first person the news report. The objective of this paper is exploring the innovations that this new type of journalism introduces due to the adoption of new technologies, focusing on the analysis of the virtual reality role in the construction of the informative discourse. In order to do so, the first immersive journalism projects produced by Spanish media are analysed: Urban Beekeeping and Campo urbano, ciudad rural (Immersive Journalism Lab) as well as Vive Río: Heroínas (created by the Spanish public broadcaster, RTVE). As a result, it has been observed that the main difference in relation to traditional journalism is the possibility spectators are offered to experience contents in first person. This is the key aspect which establishes the most significative innovations in the creation of immersive journalism products in relation to traditional journalism.
