Abstract

The paper evaluates different activities that could be used to teach metalinguistic abilities in preliterate children. For this purpose, the study examines three programmes (rhyme, phoneme identity, and phoneme deletion) designed to develop these abilities in children. The results show that teaching produces improvements on phonological skills, in particular phoneme identity and phoneme deletion programmes which produce a greater increase on the development of these abilities. The results also indicate that the use of initial, middle, or final word sounds is equally effective for teaching word analysis skills to preliterate children.
