Abstract
This article analyses the phenomenon of immigration that has been taking place in Spain during recent years and the diversity attributed to this foreign immigrant population. As regards economic situation, four well-differentiated groups can be defined in this collective. Knowledge of the characteristics of the immigrants, their place of origin and the number of regular and irregular inmigrants can help to eliminate the false stereotypes and prejudices often used to identify this collective. Recognition of cultural pluralism, not only as legitimate but also as necessary for the enrichment of peoples, is the central thesis of this study, which suggests some cooperation policies for a future intercultural education.
