Abstract
This study shows the beginning of secondary education in the Spanish towns and province of Ávila. In the middle of the XlXth century the moderate liberalism built the national system of education in Spain. The example of Ávila, devoted in this occasion to the secondary education, is illustrative of a minority and elitist education addressed to the Spanish middle class.
