Abstract
In this paper the literature is reviewed to describe the characteristics of individuals with low-level comprehension skills, understood as the ability to learn through reading. These characteristics are centred on two aspects: what they obtain from reading and how they work in order to obtain their representation. In the empirical part of this study, two samples of subjects: one with good comprehension and the other with poor comprehension (pupils from 6th, 7th and 8th grades) are compared through their profiles of a text recall: in their skill to base their recall on the logical and rhetorical organization of the original texts, in their skill to recognize the topics of each paragraph, and in their skill to summarize. In all these aspects there were clear differences (p<.001) between the two selected groups.
