Abstract

The geographical distribution in the Mediterranean Basin of place-names ending in -oussa shows a concentration in the West. If we consider that the grammatical form is chronologically earlier than the Greek colonization of the area (yet the possibility of linguistic archaisms can not be precluded), the names actually suggest some exploratory travels by Greek sailors (Euboeans and possibly also other groups) several centuries before the beginning of Phocaean settlements.
