Resum

The paper investigates two ways of reducing self-punitive behaviour in autistic children, which occurs frequently. The first procedure involves reinforcing responses that are incompatible with this type of behaviour. A high rate of success in decreasing this behaviour was observed with this procedure. The second is based on the assumption (demostrated in behavioural analysis) that self-punitive behaviours represent an escape response in situations of anxiety. The procedure therefore seeks to eliminate or reduce this situational anxiety through systematic desensitization. The short term results is a total absence of self-punitive behaviours in situations of anxiety, and in the long term it completely eliminate this behaviour from subjects repertoire.
