This article analyzes the relationship between organizational form and labor productivity of a sample of 223 Spanish automobile distributors. The organizational forms compared are company-owned outlets and franchising. We observe that sales per employee and value added per employee of independent dealerships are 9.74 and 5.19 per cent higher, respectively, than that of company-owned outlets. The cause of this gap may be the high-powered incentives of franchisees compared with those of salaried managers of owned outlets. The creation of company-owned outlets, in spite of their lower productivity, can be explained according to the empirical evidence available by the presence of costs in the sale of dealerships. These costs are higher when the market is new
