Abstract
Starting from a summary of the stylized facts of development in the last 50 years, this paper addresses the perspectives of development policy for the 21st Century. With this purpose, the different proposals of development policies defended in the second half of the 20th Century are reviewed. The important role played by the institutions, the diversity of growth experiences, and the difficulties of finding one policy which fits all cases, are some of the conclusion drawn from this critical revision that need to be taken into consideration when designing development proposal for the future.
