Abstract

This study was designed to analyze the relation between efficiency and automaticity of arithmetic-fact retrieval and skill at solving multidigit arithmetic problems. Using chronometric techniques and interference tasks, we compare a sample of 16 mathematically disabled sixth grade children with 16 normal children in simple addition and multidigit arithmetic problems performance. The results support several conclusions. First, there are substantial differences between the groups in arithmetic-fact retrieval. The disabled group showed a lack of efficiency and automaticity of the retrieval. And second, this deficit affects to solving multidigit task, possibly because the children do not have the necessary cognitive resources for the demands of other more complex processes implied in the task.
