Abstract
This anide analyses the implications of gender among the paliamentarians of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. With that purpose, it analyses the parliamentarians' class origins, their socioeconomic position, the political involvement of their relatives and the activies of deputies before becoming professional politicians. This analysis leads to the conclusion that gender is not a common source of variation among the parliamentarians of all these five countries. The reason for this is that the role of gender seems to vary from country to country.
