Abstract
The present article explores the way as the regional variable affect to the party system and the political parties in Ecuador in the period 1978-2000. It argues that the Ecuadorian party system is regionally fragmented in two parties subsystem (Costa-Sierra) and, at the same time, the parties are internally fragmented in regional and local spaces. The parties and voter analysis from the regional variable transform the Ecuadorian party system in a system much more stable than the literature maintains.
