Abstract In this article, we study the relation between the degree of specialization on six different dimensions and the level of technical efficiency in the Spanish hospital sector. The efficiency scores are obtained via DEA techniques applied to several variables and principal factors which summarize the relevant information about an ampler number of variables. The analysis shows that specialization in outpatient consults, intensive care, emergency care or pediatrics tend to increase the hospital efficiency score. Other factors are also found to be significant such as localization in some regions, orientation toward the public provision and the hospital regional share.
