Abstract
This paper suggests an explanation about technological development with the aim of surpassing deterministic models. Determinism considers that technology is the outcome of the application of scientific theories. Instead, I would like to propose a new characterization of technological knowledge, taking into account engineering sciences. Those sciences are clusters of similar and efficient models, and they are essential to understand some technological developments. As an example of this perspective, I will analyze the relationships between strength of materials and the development and diffusion of train system.
