Abstract

In 23 cases presenting with intractable orofaciocervical malign pain, small doses of morphine were injected in the lateral ventricle through an Ommaya type reservoir placed subcutaneously. After a mean follow-up of 2-3 months a satisfactory 50 to 100% pain relief was obtained in 18 patients. The more effective free of side-effects dose of morphine was 0,3 mg/ml. In 16 patients developed diverse degrees of tolerance to morphine, generally related to previous parenteral or intrathecal administration of morphine. Side-effects were minimal and transitory, with no occurrence of respiratory depression
