Résumé

One of the current procedures to detect deception by analyzing the speaker’s verbal content is the SCAN (Scientific Content Analysis) Technique, developed by Sapir and commercialized by the LSI (Laboratory for Scientific Interrogation). This technique is widely advertised, and many law enforcement officials and other legal professionals from several countries have been trained in using SCAN. However, research on its validity is scarce, has serious methodological problems, and the empirical results have not always been positive. In this paper the SCAN technique is introduced, its underlying rationale is summarized, and the scarce empirical research conducted to validate it is described.
