Abstract

Thanato-ethics has to present ethical principles and moral criteria with which the person on the verge of death and the doctor assisting him or her, can find perspectives to make rational decisions. A type of Decalogue is offered, which summarises the moral conflicts that are acutest at the end of life. Inspired by the deontological codes which relevant medical communities have approved during the past few years, the author of this present piece of work clearly shows the imbalance that exists between Netherlands legislation and the official ethical declarations of European doctors who consider euthanasia an inconsistent practice with respect to deontology. These are the three principal conflicts that are dealt with: palliative care, futility, and euthanasia.
