Resumo

This paper reviews the economic literature aiming at understanding the roots and causes of civil armed conflicts. In order to do so, the first section shall revise the evolution and intensity of armed conflict since the World War II. This review clearly shows how civil armed conflicts are, by far, the most common type of conflicts, and how developing countries are the most common scenario of such conflicts. In a second section we document the economic implications of civil war for developing countries. Finally we study the economic determinants of civil war.
