Résumé

Portugals first republic meant the end of a long liberal political cycle that began in the 19th century and that would give rise to a dictatorial regime lasting more than 40 years. That system, received with hope by a large part of the country, ended up immersed in a state of genrealized disenchantment which fostered the coup in 1926 and its broad social support. The political dynamics of those stormy years is what best explains this situation in Portugal. We are going to focus our reflection on this in order to present an explanatory synthesis of the main factors contributing to the failure of that singular experience of a republic.
