Zusammenfassung

The Upper Precambrian-Lower Cambrian sedimentary succession in the central areas of the Central Iberian Zone has been subdivided into twelve lithostratigraphic units, mostly siliciclastic, ranging in thickness between 1,800 and 3,900 meters. The lithological and geochemical features of each unit are given and facies and facies associations characterizing those Units are described and interpreted. The facies associations· show that sedimentation occurred in slope and base of slope environments, mainly resulting from turbidity currents and debris flows, and to a lesser extent from submarine slides and tractive flows. Two depositional sequences, separated by a type 1 unconformity, are recognized. The lower one consists of Units I to IV and a lowstand systems tract, a transgressive systems tract and a highstand systems tract are identified. The upper one begins at the base of Unit V and probably ends at the top the Calizas de Tamames Formation. The upper sequence records a lowstand systems tract and sea level oscillations of minor order. New geochemical data confirm two compositions derived from the source area and show a gradual vertical variation.
