Abstract
Last decade has witnessed an unknown interest within the economic analysis in the issue of income distribution, making this area of economics centre of a lively debate, especially, although not only, related with the impact of inequality on growth, social stability, an so on. This paper offers a survey of the literature published during the last decade on the subjects of poverty and inequality in Latin America. It also offers the basic data and highlights the exchanges in moral values and economic theory regarding these phenomena. The paper also focuses on the role of Welfare State, the new public policies proposed to reduce poverty and inequality and the problems encountered to modify the current statu quo.
