Abstract

This paper presents the first results obtained by research on the malacological fauna from La Garma A (Omoño, Cantabria). The remains from levels attributed to the Gravettian are analysed (Layers F and E). These include, in the first place, the molluscs gathered as food, of which the most frequently consumed species is Patella vulgata, with large-sized specimens. Equally, a large number of shells of various species with no bromatological value were gathered and, in part, transformed into suspended objects of adornment. Finally, an assessment is made of the role played by these resources in Cantabrian Spain and Europe in the Gravettian.
