Abstract
This paper contributes to identifying and explaining contingencies that foster companies to develop proactive environmental strategies in logistics and supply chain management. In particular, six variables are analysed: company size, environmental values and beliefs of managers, implementation and certification of an environmental management system, stakeholder environmental pressure, integration into a multinational corporation, and industrial sector. The empirical results show that the effect of the two latter variables is captured by the effect of the other. The first four variables however have a distinctive explanatory power that validates them as determinant factors. The results therefore contribute to defining the profile of those companies whose logistics function is more committed to environmental preservation.
