Abstract

Postmodernist rewritings of the fairy tale have focused on the social function of the genre and provided an ideological perspective of its canonical cultural patterns by pointing at the way in which they reinforce patriarchal values. This paper focuses on how the revision of the fairy tale in «The Cloud» subverts and deconstructs the traditional plot and patterns of the genre in order to free female cultural identity from stereotyped role models and reconstruct a new sense of identity. I am interested in exploring how Catherine rewrites the narratives of patriarchy, how she resists the constrictions imposed by such narratives and how such fictional resistance interacts with her attempts of achieving freedom by inventing new structures
