Abstract

This paper analyzes the evolution of Salamanca's image from a symbolic, socio-political and cultural point of view. This review starts in the first stage of Franco's regime and spreads up to our days, taking as main references some photographic projects that have raised critical visions about the city and her urban and architectural transformations. We will study in two epochs in which the city has experienced important changes motivated by political and economic imperatives: the postwar period, when Salamanca reaches a significant place in the ideology of the dictatorship, and the present defined by the tourist strength of the town. In both moments, several artists have employed the photography to develop a visual critique of a continuously changing city.
