Resum

Purpose: This literature review aims to clarify whether acupuncture is an effective therapy for pain and anxiety associated with oral surgery. Methods: A systematic search in December 2011 in PubMed database with keywords: acupuncture, oral surgery and analgesia. Results were Iimited to randomized clinical trials. Results: 6 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria from the 52 initially obtained. Conclusions: Most research shows that acupuncture is effective in oral surgery as an analgesic procedure. More detailed studies are needed to determine the exact mechanism exerted in connection with the oral surgery and its results are truly effective and not mask a psychological mechanism of placebo.
