Abstract
Using a data base registering the results of interviews with Latin American deputies and political leaders, the article places Left-wing presidents and parties on an ideological scale. The data indicates that, in a majority of countries, the president is more to the Left of the party he belongs to, provoking a polarizing effect on political life. It is the case precisely of those presidents normally included in the category of «populists». This leads the author to suggest that the empirical evidence confirms the existence of two differentiated Lefts in Latin America.
