Abstract
Introduction: Parasitic diseases are the most prevalent diseases in the world. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and clinical and epidemiological characteristics of parasitic diseases diagnosed in Gran Canaria during a year. Methods: We included all diagnosed cases of parasitosis in public health centers of Gran Canaria during a year. Then, we conducted a descriptive study, analyzing socio-demographic characteristics, presentation and associated factors. Results: A total of 957 cases were diagnosed (55% men). 58.4% were due to protozoa, the most frequent was Giardia intestinalis (84%), followed by Trichomonas vaginalis (13.4%), Plasmodium sp (3.9%) and Cryptosporidium sp (2.3%). In relation to helminthiasis (40.7% of total), 76.4% corresponded to Enterobius vermicularis, 6.1% were due to hookworm, 3.6% for Trichuris trichiura and 3% to different filariasis. The largest age group was between 1 and 10 years. 21.2% of the cases were imported, most of them from sub-Saharan countries. Conclusions: The real prevalence of different parasitic diseases on the island of Gran Canaria is greater than that declared by formal systems. Parasites that more frequently affect the native population of Gran Canaria who has not traveled to tropical areas are Giardia intestinalis and Enterobius vermicularis
