Abstract
In the SW border of the Duero basin (Spain) Tertiary deposits begin with the strongly cemented Paleocene sandstones. Main outcrops of these rocks are located in the surrounding areas of Salamanca and Zamora. On this paper results of the studies carried out to obtain their mechanical and physical properties are presented. The analysis of several thin sections under the petrographic microscopic was also done, quantifying with the aid of the free image analysis software "HHI Image" the main petrographic parameters that govern their mechanical behaviour. Results showed that the strength of these rocks depends on the conditions of the test, displaying a 30-40% decrease on tests with saturated conditions. According to these values, the silicified levels should be classified as weak rocks.
