Abstract
This article analyzes one of the most pervasive topos of the so-called litterae 'humaniores', the textual and hermeneutical coexistence and conflict between active and contemplative life. We offer a study of the interpretation of the Martha and Maria scriptural episode and its appearance in Castilian literature during the 14th and 15th centuries. The purpose of this essay is to show, in a diachronic and comparative perspective, the variegated metamorphoses experienced by this 'topos' .
