Resumo

This work presents the preliminary results of a teaching experience carried out for two consecutive years in an annual course in Public Economics for Law students whose aims were to enforce teaching methods related with student-centred learning and to foster reading, developing several transversal and specific competences among students. This activity consisted in voluntary readings of books on Social Sciences by students and evaluation was performed through discussion seminars on the issues dealt with in the books. Participation among students in this voluntary initiative was relatively high and an anonymous survey carried out by the teacher confirmed its good acceptance among students. Moreover, the article also discusses the main advantages and limitations of this action, aiming to improve future results.
