Abstract
This article presents an overview of a popular literature genre in Spanish poetic chapbooks ('pliego suelto') from the 16th century generally referred to as 'relaciones de sucesos' (narrative ballads on 'contemporary' events). The paper pays attention to several aspects in order to understand these frequently misunderstood works: the relevance of printing, the geographic and temporal distribution of chapbooks, the functions of titles, graphic material, etc
