Abstract

The Sephardic newspaper "El Mesajero"/"The Messenger" was published in aljamiado Judeo-Spanish (that is Judeo-Spanish written with Hebrew letters) and in English, in Los Angeles (California) from 1933 to 1935. In this article the authors analyze the content of this publication paying special attention to information on the activities and organization of Sephardic communities in Los Angeles, the relation of Sephardic immigrants to their Jewish communities of origin (especially those of Rhodes) and to other Sephardic communities in the United States, and their strategies of adaptation to American society at large.
