Résumé

The Caravaca basin which is located at North of the Cadiz-Alicante Fault (Betic Cordillera), shows an important tectonic activity during the Pliocene and Quaternary epochs. Two zones, the North (Argos River basin) and the South (Quipar River basin) with different geological and geomorphological behaviour can be differentiated. The most important geomorphologic units are briefly described and the evolution of the fluvial network is analyzed. The available data suggest the connection between both zones and the existence of a NW-SE fluvial network until Middle Pleistocene Times. During this period, tectonic movements provoked the desconnection of the drainage and afterwards the capture of Argos River (North Zone) by an extern drainage, which has given rise to the strong dissection of this sector.
