Abstract
During the reign of Isabel II the city of Salamanca was going through a moment of palpable decadence in the eyes of the travellers that visited. Stagnant in both its urban growth and demographics, damaged during the War of Independence and away from the main cultural centres of the country, it only managed to attract the attention of scholars because of its rich artistic heritage. Of all its monuments, the ones in Plateresque style became the most representative of the city, endowing it with the character that would be discussed in the articles published by the artistic press between 1833 and 1868. We intend to study how these authors assessed Plateresque architecture through an analysis and comparison of their texts, in addition to finding out to what extent they managed to make society aware of the need to conserve and restore these ensigns of stone to their ancient splendour.
