Resumen

In the dirge that closes Euripides’ Andromache the form κατάρξω (l. 1199) has been traditionally interpreted as a 1st sg. fut. act. (‘I will begin the funeral song for my dead master’). Allegedly, the chorus is taking on a leading role, which breaks genre conventions. This interpretation is problematic from the point of view of syntax and semantics. Difficulties disappear if κατάρξω is interpreted as a 2nd sg. aor. mid. with a Doric augment (‘you have begun the funeral ritual for my dead master’).
