Abstract

The "San Rafael" School was one of the most important educational institutions in the city of Salamanca at the end of the 19th century. This is a detailed study of the centre: its foundation, the studies it offered, its ideological orientation, life within the school, the number of students enrolled, the staffà What characterises and differentiates this institution from others are its educational methods, systems and activities, which were completely innovative, breaking with the pedagogical routine that characterized the educational system in Salamanca during the later decades of the 19th century. The "San Rafael" School is worth studying and knowing precisely for its role as promoter and pioneer in the history of education in Salamanca, in the history of teaching methods and pedagogical advances and innovations
