Abstract

The latest generation of information technologies enables the creation of geological itineraries and virtual flights through georeferencing in free virtual globes (e.g., Google Earth), allowing tridimensional visualization (3D) by combining thematic-layers (geological, topographical map, digital terrain model). These technologies facilitate analyzing the spatial distribution of geological objects and landscapes. The 3D visualization can be enriched with Augmented Reality through upload of geodatabases (GeoApps) containing real world ima- ges, specialized descriptions, interpretive schemes and videos of selected geosites, which can also be implemented in geoportals and viewers of public and private organizations. Geological cartography is improved by the correct georeferencing and correlation between different geological formations and structures. Also better visualization and interpretation through interactive observation of spatial distribution, uniform juxtaposition of different sheets of 2D cartography, scale change by zoom, and creation of digital cartography in continuum. Smartphones, tablets or laptops can be used to easily access this information, in real-time and anywhere, via QR codes and free GeoApps which can be used in Geoscience education and geotourism. Geoheritage assessment and the use of geosites for didactic and geotourism purposes, through 3D virtual tours, are also referred.
