Abstract

A comparative study of the unidimensional compressibility of two clays of continental origin but with different geological history is presented: the Armuña Clay and the Viso Clay. The former is a quaternary deposit of smectite and illite, with very high plasticity; the latter is a miocene overconsolidated clay of intermediate plasticity and with less smectite content. Under unidimensional compression, and taking the behaviour of reconstituted samples as a reference, it is observed that the natural samples of the Viso Clay are more rigid and their consolidation curves show trends of overconsolidated clay materials, with Cc values of 0.255, while when reconstituted Cc* changes to 0.455; for the Armuña Clay, the values are noticeably higher, 0.51 and 1.1 respectively. The log(σ'v) - e curves for this latter clay are typical of normally consolidated soils, but normalized by the Iv, void index, the relative position between the intrinsic and natural curves is similar to that of other overconsolidated clays, and differs from than expected.
