Abstract
British economist Anthony B. Atkinson (1944-2017) died on 1 January 2017. This text recalls his figure and his contributions to the economy of inequality. In response to market failures, Atkinson advocated compensating public sector activity through the Welfare State as an economic policy proposal to combat inequality.
