Abstract

The aim of this study was to study the identity construction of inmate population from under Kelly’s personal constructs theory. Through individualized interviews, a RepGrid, in which elements and constructs were planned in advance, was applied to 18 parti cipants The selected elements denoted warmth and competence, according to the Stereotype Content Model. The analysis of the cognitive structure, conflicts and self-definition allowed identify relevant differences among inmates and in how their identities are construed throughout the process. These findings underscore the importance of using constructivist approaches to understand the life of prisoners as a means to improve interventions and social reintegration of this population.
